The Blitz was the name given to heavy bombing of British towns and cities by the German airforce (the Luftwaffe) between 1940 and 1941. The German leaders believed that British people would be afraid and ask the British government for the war to be stopped.
However, it had the opposite effect. Many people were more determined than ever to win the war. People adapted to the difficult situation; some built air raid shelters in their back gardens and even sent their children away to the countryside (this was called evacuation).
